Palpitations overview

Heart palpitations are feelings that your heart has either skipped a beat or added an extra beat. Palpitations feel different for each person. This symptom may be associated with an entirely benign cause or may be a manifestation of a serious heart rhythm disorder, that might require treatment.

Dr. Labovitz explains the different types of palpitations, what may be causing them, and how to know when you need to see a doctor.

What causes heart palpitations?

Common causes include:

Palpitations diagnosis

The diagnostic evaluation starts with a history and physical examination. This is followed by an electrocardiogram (EKG) or prolonged rhythm monitoring; a stress test and echocardiogram may be necessary. A cardiac MRI or electrophysiology study may be required in specific cases.

Palpitations management

Management depends on the cause of your palpitations. Offending agents must be eliminated and, in some cases, antiarrhythmic drugs or an ablation procedure may be indicated.
