What is an electrocardiogram?

An electrocardiogram records your heart’s electrical activity using electrodes attached to your skin.

Dr. Arthur Labovitz explains how this simple test works and what it will tell about the health of a patient’s heart.

Why is it done?

This test can help in the management of your specific cardiac condition; it helps to diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities, heart chamber size, heart artery blood flow, effects of medications, electrolyte abnormalities and even specific genetic cardiac anomalies.

What can you expect during an electrocardiogram?

Your chest has to be exposed for the electrodes to be placed, chest hair may need to be shaved; the technician will ask you to remain very quiet for less than 30 seconds while the tracing is obtain to avoid artifacts. The test is not associated with any discomfort.

How to prepare for an EKG?

No preparation is required prior to performing an electrocardiogram.

After the procedure

After the procedure is performed, your provider will analyze the tracings and determine how the results apply to your particular case.
