CITY OF NAPERVILLE UPDATES

Don’t forget to attend 3/30 NAHC Candidate Forum 7-9 pm (Municipal Center) or watch it live on NCTV17. For more information regarding the candidates, visit http://www.positivelynaperville.com/elections.html 2.      Packer/Argonne – Stimulus Package Proposals - the city of Naperville has partnered with Packer Engineering and Argonne National Laboratories to write proposals for grant funding to further the development of and participate in emerging environmental technologies.  The NCTV17 Naperville Connection news story was viewed during the meeting.  http://www.nctv17.com/nc-03-20-09-gasifier.html3.      Emissions Inventory – GHG Inventory Update - CDM is scheduled to present the baseline data report to the Envirolink Committee 3/31.  Stephanie Hastings and Mark Skowron of NCEC will attend the presentation.4.      Department of Energy – $1.3 Million is slotted for Naperville (recovery bill) for energy efficiency programs. The city of Naperville will write a proposal for how funds would be used. http://www.energy.gov/7129.htm Please send your ideas to ncec.email@yahoo.com for how you think the city of Naperville should spend this money.

EVENT & RESIDENT EDUCATION COMMITTEE UPDATES

1.      NCEC will table the Owen Earth Day Fair - April 17 (6:30-8:30) and the Patterson Earth Day Fair - April 24 (6:00-8:30). Event Committee Chair Robin Kott passed a signup sheet for volunteers to staff the table at each event.  NCEC agreed to distribute the remaining inventory of educational brochures to parents, and to create a new “Idling Ticket” to pass out to students. Jodi Trendler has been developing the ticket and it will route to the Board for approval.  NCEC is looking for a volunteer to write a few “please don’t idle” scripts for volunteers to use during these elementary school events which would be appropriate for elementary students and parents. Bill Dawe was volunteered to create a quiz for children about energy efficiency.  NCEC is looking for ideas for new signage to replace the CO2 graphs which may appeal to elementary students. 2.      NCEC has been invited as a speaker during the Green Earth Fair - May 3 (Green Earth Institute 1-5 pm). Residential Education committee chair, Christine Martersteck will be the designated speaker. Stephanie Hastings and Christine will develop a power point presentation titled, “Are You Effectively Green?” which will focus on the current residential contribution to Naperville’s GHG emissions (data from GHG Inventory) and the most effective ways residents can reduce personal greenhouse gas emissions.  An article which focuses on effectiveness of actions will be a good resource for the presentation: http://www.environmentmagazine.org/Archives/Back%20Issues/September-October%202008/gardner-stern-full.html.  NCEC members could also pass out the remaining 50 CFL bulbs during this fair.3.      Robin Kott mocked up an idea for a new brochure for feedback (attached to email). Please email feedback to ncec.email@yahoo.com 4.      Spending WISHLIST – all NCEC general members and committee members need to send all wishlist ideas to ncec.email@yahoo.com.  This list will be used to help formulate a budget and will also give direction to the Funding committee for grant writing.  For example, wishlist ideas include: car magnets with anti-idling message to pass out at elementary school fairs and events and CFL bulbs to hand out at events.

NOTE ABOUT SCHOOLS

It seems as though there was a lot of interest and conversation about implementing green initiatives within our local schools. Please consider volunteering because if we get enough interest, a ‘NCEC Schools” committee could be formed to focus on this audience as an educational target. This committee could consist of NCEC members as well as PTA members and district employees. Other organizations, such as various PTA’s, EII and Seven Generations Ahead have been working on energy and zero waste programs and these other groups have been working to develop and strengthen relationships at the district level (within both 203 and 204) in order to strategically expand ‘green’ efforts at a greater scale.

  • Mark Skowron shared photographs he collected of Anti-Idling signage present near Highland Elementary School (email attachment).
  • Michelle Hickey shared a presentation about energy savings within a Danville school district.
  • Michelle agreed to learn what the City of Naperville could do for signs and see if there is a policy in place for District 203.
  • Jean McCollum mailed an article about children in Italy using a “foot-bus” which is essentially a bus route, with adult leaders and NO BUS! http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/27/world/europe/27bus.html?ref=europe
